International Shanghai Photo Festival

i'm currently in shanghai at the international photography festival.
i was invited to show my portfolio in an exhibition with the title "new documentary photography in the 21st century.
quite nice and interesting, i saw some amazing chinese photography
and spent a fortune on drinks and a superb dinner in one of those fancy decadent restaurants over the roofs of shanghai.
but the best part about the festival were again the people:
met some nice guys and my head is full of ideas for the next months and my project in bosnia...

exhibition at the lumix festival for young photojournallism
my work from kashmir will be on display at the lumix festival for young photojournalism
from june 16-20 in hannover, germany.
again, just like in la at the mopla, have a look. it's worth it.
as i'm currently a semester off from university (actually i'm a student at hannover...) i'm not too much involved in all the planning-procedures etc. but last year vanessa winship, brian storm, thomas dworzak and antonin kratochvil were guestspeakers at the festival and this year it's for sure not going to get worse...it's going to be a fantsatic festival, so if you have some time, come over and enjoy.

here are some frames from the preparations and aftermath of the festival in 2008:

exhibition, berlin, holga, miscellaneous

a lot has been happening in the past: most prominent were the nominations for the joop swart masterclass,
being a finalist for the sony world photography awards,
the 3rd place in the single feature-category of the picture of the year international with a controversial discussed image from kashmir (see blog-entry below)
and finally being listed as one of the pdn emerging 30 photographers to watch.

all of this started about some 18 months ago, when i decided to travel back to kashmir in the autumn of 2008,
although some peole at my university didn’t like that idea at all and thought it was foolish and i should spent my time in university.
sometimes it pays off to “follow your instincts”,
as Vanessa Winship once said to me...

after kashmir i spent some time on tenerife

enjoying the canaric sea, sun and birthdaypartys

when i got the message from foto8.com they gonna use my kashmir work as a feature for their webpage.
obviously i was delighted ;-) about the way things worked.
after foto8 came some more online publications, some awards and another trip to kashmir in the mid of 2009
where one can enjoy “teargas days and hashish nights”, next to the beauty of the himalayan landscape and the dal lake.

picturewise the trip went quite well, being until today the fundament of my work and is, more or less, paying my bills.
in october last year i did a assignment for geo magazine in bosnia and recently went to israel to have a look at the region and possible issues over there.

although the trip was a pain in the ass, causing a big hole in my bank account and a lot of lame images,
it finally brought me into contact with mike davis, a freelance picture-editor with whom i edited my portfolio for the masterclass.
watching him work and talking about sequencing a story was a revelation: it was amazing to see his ability to read images and see connections between them,
creating a wonderful flow that encloses the whole body of work.

by coincidence i stumbled upon my old holga negatives from kashmir,

which will now serve as a testing ground for my editing-skills. check out the story section to see the results soon...
at this point i think it’s time to say !THANK YOU! to a good friend of mine, florian müller
who is still so kind to borrow me his holga, even after i let it fall into a canal full of shit in kashmir
while runing away with the local kids and zack from baton-beating and pretty angry police officers.

but after some two years of borrowing i should propably buy a holga for myself
to be finally able to use the dozens of rolls of film i got from kodak as part of the toomuchchocolate film grant...
i still have a leica mp but i'm just unable to use it properly and it’s serving as a cupboard-beauty and dust-catcher .

i’m currently on the way to berlin, to make the last preparations for my upcoming exhibition at the c/o berlin gallery,
where my kashmir work will have it’s first ever exhibition from 19th march until 25th may 2010.
well, when i write these lines it's monday and i've written this entry already two times as i forgot to save and got kicked out from this damn html-system...
here are some more frames from berlin, kashmir and hanover. this time, without too much text...

PDN's 30 and Sony World Photography Awards
i'm so slow and lazy...at least when it comes to putting new awards and nominations online.
additional to that is my little son vasco keeping me quite busy and i just love to be distracted by him.
dragged away from this mac and writing millions of emails, trying to build contacts and some kind of career which future-direction i currently just can't see.
i feel more like a photonerd, unable to climb out of the photographic box, with all my concentration, time and energy going into this passion.
don't get me wrong, i LOVE photography, but it's definetly a time- and energy-sucking profession
in which it is very hard to earn your money and keep your friendships outside the photographic world alive...
especially the latter one can be a source of big frustration...
another story...
just recently, due to a storm over germany, my train was late about two hours and while most people around me were pretty pissed,
i was happy as i finally found the time to continue reading a book from Ryszard Kapuściński,
a polish journalist who spent a lot of his time in africa and latinamerica and always carried a book from the ancient greek author herodot with him.
it's an interesating read, recommended ;-)
anyways, for those of you who are still reading this lines, i just wanted to leave a note that i'm happy (really!) to announce i'm again shortlisted for the
Sony World Photography Awards in the Contemporary Issues Section
as well as being one of the PDN Emerging 30's.
Concerning the Sony Awards i'm still woindering if i've entered the right category, as marcus bleasdale's story about kashmir is in the "current affairs" section. i don't get the difference between "current affairs" and "contemporary issues"...is "current affairs" more newsy than "contemporary issues" ?
it nearly one o clock now, vasco will wak me up in five hours, so cheers and hope to see some of you at the
Lumix Festival in Hannover or in Perpignan later this year.
a*

3rd place Feature Singles POYI

i recently got awarded with a 3rd place in the in the feature-single category of the
Picture of the year International photo competition.
i've submitted some images from kashmir which didn't fit into the 10-image story (which got voted out, by the way ;-)
and one of them was the shot from the mourning-ceremony for the two girls who got (alledgelly?!!!) raped and murdered by indian securoty forces in the town of shopian, kashmir.
i took that frame with a two seconds exposure time, shifting the camera from one side of the room to the other at the mid of the exposure,
creating some kind of double-exposure or at least two images within one frame.
i never really thought about the ethics of that technique and if it was crossing some "border" of photojournalism
as i believe that in the end all that matters is a moving and meaningful image and not if it's in a "photojournalistic tradition"
(which i think can be pretty boring, like most traditions..) or not.
anyway...as you can read on scott strazzente's (one of this years poyi judges) blog,
there was some big discussion going on, wether my image should be allowed to be awarded with the 3rd place,
concerning my shooting-technique.
i finally had to send them a description of how i shot the image, something i never had to do before.
it somehow reminded me on the story of the danish photographer who was eventually denied an award from the danish press photograpers association
as the judges came to the conclusion, the way he used photoshop was actually crossing some border
and his photoshopped images had little left of what was actually the reality.
for myself, i'm just trying to explore the borders of photojournalism as pj in it's traditional sense
is getting too narrow to picture the world the way i see it.

i'm finally back home in germany and quite happy with my espresso-machine, a big 24" screen and a nice and warm bed ;-)
